5 Tips for Dental Trauma

Emergency

When dental trauma happens, the period between the injury and getting medical attention is the most critical. In cases of dental emergency, with either you or someone else, it is crucial to understand the steps to take to save the situation. If emergency dental trauma were to occur and the person does not get immediate care, the result would be different than when oral care is immediately given.

Accidents happen all the time. Kids especially are prone to falls, slips and sprains, and while some of these injuries may be minor, they can sometimes be devastating. A dentist should examine every dental trauma immediately to determine the extent of the damage. However, before seeing the dentist, we have covered five important tips that could help with dental trauma.

Importance of instant oral care

Immediate oral care increases the patient’s chances of getting a successful result. For instance, if someone’s tooth gets knocked out, the tooth may still be saved if emergency oral care is given. Otherwise, the person may lose the tooth altogether.

Tips for dental trauma

If you or someone else experiences dental trauma, the following tips may prove highly beneficial and tooth-saving. Please note that even if the person feels better, they must still pay the dentist a visit.

Tip for knocked out tooth

If a permanent tooth gets knocked out, the tooth should be preserved to make sure a replant is possible. First, find the tooth and clean it properly while trying not to touch the tooth roots. If possible, try putting the tooth back into the socket, and hold it in position using gauze.

Otherwise, you can put the tooth in a plastic bag containing the person’s saliva or a cup of milk. Afterward, seek dental care immediately. A baby tooth cannot be replaced, but it still requires attention.

Tip for a cracked tooth

In the case of cracked, broken or chipped teeth, try rinsing your mouth with warm water (possibly saline) to keep it clean. You should bring any pieces of the tooth when visiting the dentist. Depending on the extent of damage, bonding or extraction may be necessary.

Tips for injured or swollen jaw

Injury to the jaw can cause damage to the bones, gums and teeth. Place an ice pack on the surface of the affected area intermittently (15 minutes on, 15 minutes off). The cold compress will help alleviate the swelling. The dentist may perform X-rays to determine the extent of the damage.

Tip for bit lip or tongue and toothache

Rinse the mouth and place an ice pack on the area to reduce the swelling. Over-the-counter painkillers can also help alleviate the pain before getting dental attention.

Tips for loose or shifted tooth

If you feel a tooth is loose or wobbly, you need to keep pressure off the area. A loose tooth can be saved in most situations. If the tooth has shifted or moved deeper into the jawbone, the tooth needs to be examined by a dental expert within 24 hours.

Final note

While you may not be able to prevent trauma, you can still save the situation by reaching out to a qualified dentist as soon as possible.
