Different Types of Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are prosthetics that are used to restore the function and appearance of a severely damaged tooth. A crown covers the tooth completely and is designed to blend in with the surrounding teeth. Crowns are often combined with other dental prosthetics like implants and bridges. It is the most versatile prosthetic used in modern dentistry.

Types of dental crowns

Getting a crown often requires two visits to the dentist’s office. Depending on equipment available, you can even get a same-day crown. Your dentist will examine your teeth to create a customized crown. At your first visit, the dentist will remove some enamel from to the tooth and provide you with a temporary crown. Once the lab creates the permanent restoration, the dentist will attach it to your troublesome tooth.

Depending on your budget, style and needs, the dentist may suggest one of the following types of crowns.

Ceramic/porcelain

Ceramic or porcelain crowns are the most commonly used type. They look the most natural due to the color and texture of these substances. They blend in perfectly with the natural teeth. Unfortunately, these also tend to be one of the weaker types of crowns that are more prone to damage. Ceramic crowns are best suited for front teeth given their remarkable aesthetics. However, your dentist will likely suggest a more durable option for your back teeth since they withstand the brunt of biting forces.

Porcelain fused to metal

This type of crown combines the aesthetics of porcelain caps with the durability of metal crowns. It does require the removal of a moderate amount of tooth enamel before it can be fitted. That said, this blend is a good option for style and strength.

Gold

Crowns can be made from precious metals like gold, so go for it if it suits your personal style. Gold crowns are very durable, but they are soft enough not to damage your other teeth.

Base metal alloys

Crowns that are made from base metal alloys are very tough and highly resistant to corrosion. Much like gold, the downside of these dental crowns is that they stand out.

Why dentists use dental crowns

As mentioned earlier, dental crowns are one of the more durable prosthetics dentists use. They are safe for patients of all ages. These devices can be used for the following issues:

  • Protecting a tooth that has been badly damaged by decay or trauma
  • Restoring a worn down or broken tooth
  • Supporting a tooth that needs a large filling
  • Restoring the appearance of a poorly shaped or discolored tooth
  • Holding prosthetics like a dental bridge in place
  • Serving as the tooth following a dental implant
  • Protecting a tooth after a root canal

Crowns allow you to keep your real teeth

Thanks to crowns, you can avoid having your severely damaged tooth removed. Instead of paying for implants or other prosthetics, you can get a crown to protect and reinforce your tooth.
