How to Handle a Dental Emergency While on Vacation

When a person goes on vacation, the thought of having any type of dental emergency is probably the furthest thing from their mind. However, a problem can strike without warning, and it can quickly become the only thing they are thinking about.

Perhaps a filling fell out, a toothache has become extremely painful, or a tooth has chipped or cracked due to a hard bite. When times like these occur, it can seem like the vacation may be ruined. However, with emergency dentists being available in many different places these issues can be fixed rather quickly and the pain and discomfort can be managed.

In this article, we are going to cover what you should do if you have a dental emergency when you are on vacation and miles away from home.

What is considered a dental emergency?

Generally speaking, an issue that has popped up that is causing severe bleeding, pain and discomfort in the mouth would be considered a dental emergency. Sometimes it can be hard to determine if a dental issue is an emergency, but if you ask the following questions and the answer is "yes", then it is most likely a dental emergency.

Answering "yes" to these questions would most likely be a dental emergency:

  • Is there severe pain and discomfort that is causing you not to be able to eat or speak normally?
  • Has your tooth fallen out or become dislodged? Having a dentist take a look as quickly as possible in this case could save the tooth. However, waiting could be detrimental and cause you to lose the tooth entirely
  • Do you have an infection or abscess that needs to be tended to?
  • Is there bleeding coming from the mouth that will not stop?

Typically if a person has answered "yes" to any of the above questions, it would be considered a dental emergency. Finding a local emergency dentist will be the best solution to help alleviate the pain, discomfort or risk of losing a tooth permanently.

How to find an emergency dentist on vacation

One of the best things you can do to find an emergency dentist when you are on vacation is to call your dentist's office and explain what is going on. They will usually have the resources to locate an emergency dentist in the area you are currently in.

There are also trusted online resources and websites that will have information about emergency dentists around almost any city that you may be vacationing in. The best thing to do is to reach out to a dental professional that can help guide you in getting the care that you need.
