Is Getting a Dental Crown Painful?

dental crown Chicago, IL

A dental crown is a good way for you to improve your smile. However, you might be wondering if getting one will be painful. The answer is that it can sometimes be a little uncomfortable for patients. The good news is that with advances in dentistry today, any discomfort is minimized. Read on to learn how getting a dental crown works.

The first dental crown visit

During the patient’s first visit to the dentist, the tooth will be examined and then prepared. The dentist may take X-rays of both the tooth and the nearby bone. If there is decay or there is an injury, the patient may have a root canal first. This will involve removing the soft tissue that is inside the tooth. While it might not be fun, the tooth will be less painful after the procedure.

The dentist must make room for the dental crown, which is about 2 millimeters thick. First, the patient will receive a local anesthetic, which will numb the area. To make room for the crown, the dentist will file down the tooth. The amount that is removed will depend on the type of crown.

For example, an all-metal crown is thinner, so it does not need as much of the tooth to be removed. A porcelain or a porcelain and metal crown will require more tooth to be removed. If there is a lot of the tooth structure missing, the dentist may build up the tooth first. That way, the crown will have enough space to fit.

Once the tooth has been reshaped, the dentist may make an impression of the area using a putty. The dentist will take an impression of the crown and above it. This will help the crown not to affect the patient’s bite. Getting an impression is not painful and is quick.

The dentist will send these impressions to a laboratory. The lab will make the dental crown and send it to the dentist in about two to three weeks. During the first visit, the patient will receive a temporary crown to protect the tooth. It will allow a patient to eat with care.

The second visit

After the crown has been made, the patient will return to receive the permanent crown. The dentist will remove the temporary crown from the tooth. This should not be a painful procedure. Then the dentist will check how well the permanent crown looks and fits. If it fits well, then the patient will receive a local anesthetic. This will numb the tooth so the new crown can be attached to the tooth.
