My Invisalign Trays Are Yellow; What Can I Do?

Invisalign Chicago, IL

Invisalign® is a popular alternative to traditional braces when it comes to straightening the teeth. However, due to improper maintenance, the trays may become yellow or discolored. Fortunately, if that is your situation, there are different methods to eliminate the unpleasant stains. Continue reading to learn how to clean stains from your clear aligners.

Cleaning Invisalign clear aligners

Different cleaning solutions are available to get rid of stains on clear aligners. Some solutions are more effective for eliminating stains, while others work better for removing plaque or food debris from the aligners. The following are some of the recommended cleaning solutions:

Invisalign crystals and water

A mixture of Invisalign cleaning crystals works effectively for removing stains or discoloration from clear aligners. To use, fill a container that can completely immerse the aligner trays and mix it with a pack of crystals. Stirring the water for a few seconds will allow the crystals to dissolve completely. Place the aligners inside the mixture and let it stay for about 15 minutes. Afterward, rinse the trays in warm water before wearing them or keeping them in the carrying case.

Hydrogen peroxide

Another practical solution for removing discoloration is a mixture consisting of 50 percent hydrogen peroxide and water. Including baking soda in the mix can also help clean plaque and food particles from the aligners. To make the final solution, use half water, two teaspoons of baking soda and a 50 percent concentration of hydrogen peroxide. It might take a few hours for the stains on the trays to completely come off, depending on the severity. An option is to sock the aligners over the night if the stain is a lot.

Vinegar can be used to cleaning Invisalign trays if the stain is minimal. To use, mix one-part vinegar with three parts of water. Allow the aligners to soak properly in the solution for approximately 20 minutes before proceeding to brush and rinse them with clear water.

Preventing the aligner trays from staining

Almost all aligner discoloration cases result from poor oral hygiene or drinking too many colored beverages. It might be hard to clean a stained aligner fully; that is why it is better to prevent the stains from occurring in the first place. Always remove the aligners before drinking anything other than water and remember to rinse the mouth thoroughly to get rid of food leftovers before putting the aligners back on.

Patients need to remember to rinse their aligners after removing them. This habit should be part of one’s daily oral care routine. Note that only lukewarm water should be used because hot and cold water can cause deformation. When brushing, the aligners should also be cleaned with a mild cleaning solution. Using abrasive substances or scrubbing too hard can degrade the aligners.

Final note

Fortunately, you only have to wear the aligners for about two weeks, which means you will be able to change them soon enough. However, if you are worried about your Invisalign trays turning yellow, you can take the steps highlighted in this article to remove the stains. Remember that proper oral hygiene is important for the success of the treatment.
