Pros and Cons of Dental Bonding

dental bonding

Dental bonding is a quite popular solution when it comes to people looking to improve the appearance of a tooth or restore a stained or damaged one. There are a few solutions patients get to choose from when it comes to restoring teeth, but composite bonding remains one of the most popular ones, thanks to the low price tag and the fact the process is completed during a single visit to the dentist.

When making a choice between dental bonding and alternatives like veneers and crowns, it is best to be aware of the benefits and disadvantages of each treatment option.

Dental bonding pros

1. Treatment only takes a day

When a person chips or breaks a tooth, most want to have it repaired as soon as possible. Doing so reduces the risk of an infection developing. It also allows the person to regain the function of the tooth. That means the patient can go back to eating regular foods after a tooth has been repaired with composite resins.

Veneers and crowns often require multiple visits to the dentist's clinic, unless CEREC technology is available.

2. Looks natural

The composite resins used for bonding are made to blend in with the patient's real teeth. That makes it virtually impossible to tell if a person has had a tooth repaired with bonding. It also allows the dentist to only apply the composite to the part of the tooth that has been damaged, instead of having to cover the whole tooth with resin just to make things look uniform.

3. Non-invasive procedure

Getting a tooth repaired with composite bonding is a non-invasive treatment. Anesthetics are usually not administered during this treatment, since there is no pain involved. That is starkly different from alternatives like crowns and veneers. Both of these require the removal of small portions of tooth enamel before they can be installed. That means a tooth repaired with a veneer or crown always has to be protected with a dental prosthetic, since it no longer has its natural protection from acids and bacteria in the mouth.

5. Easy to maintain

Maintaining a tooth that has been repaired with dental bonding is no different than taking care of a real one. It only requires brushing and flossing just like real teeth. Of course, a repaired tooth will not be as strong as a natural one, so patients have to exercise some discretion and avoid eating hard food items like jawbreakers or ice.

Dental bonding cons

There are a few disadvantages to repairing a tooth with composite resins. These include:

  • Not as long-lasting as crown or veneers
  • The composite is more fragile than the material used to make other prosthetics like ceramics and porcelain
  • Teeth repaired with composite resins have to be touched up from time to time
  • Composites are more susceptible to stains than the materials used to make crowns and veneers
