Dental Implant Restoration

Recovering From a Dental Implant Restoration

The final result of a dental implant restoration is a long-term solution to tooth loss, but the process does involve a somewhat invasive procedure that requires making a recovery. However, patients can keep the discomfort from the dental implant restoration to a tolerable level and recover quickly by using effective recovery tips.

How to recover from a dental implant restoration

General dentists should provide their dental implant restoration patients with a set of instructions to fully and quickly recover after the placement of the dental implant. The following are five useful tips from a general dentist on how to recover quickly after implants placement.

Practice good oral hygiene

Perhaps the most essential part of the recovery process is oral hygiene. It is important for patients to gently and thoroughly brush all areas of the mouth several times each day and use mouthwash as directed by their general dentist. By doing so, food particles and bacteria can be washed away and reduce the risk of an oral infection developing, which is often a risk for the first few days following placement because there might be swelling and minor bleeding.

Eat a soft diet

Patients can expect to have dietary restrictions for the first few days following the placement of the dental implant. It is encouraged for patients to go shopping before the placement procedure to buy soft foods to eat, such as oatmeal, yogurt, bananas, mash potatoes, etc. The less the person chews, the less likely they are to irritate the affected area.

Avoid physical activity

It is important to avoid any damage to the area where the implant is placed. In doing so, the patient will likely need to limit, if not avoid altogether, physical activities that may result in a blow to the mouth. These activities may include sports, weightlifting, etc. Once the mouth properly heals, the patient can return to their favorites activities as long as they are careful and wear a protective mouthguard when necessary.

Drink water often

It is important to also limit the intake of any drinks that may increase the risk of oral infection or irritation during the recovery stage of the dental implant restoration process. This includes but is not limited to coffee, tea, soft drinks and alcohol. Instead, patients should drink water throughout the day. Water can wash away bacteria and food particles in the mouth and keep the mouth clean and healthy.

Visit the dentist

The general dentist will likely schedule one or more checkup visits during the recovery process of a dental implant restoration. It is important for the patient to make all scheduled visits and notify the general dentist if any unexpected complications develop.
