A Full Mouth Reconstruction Often Includes Dental Bridges

full mouth reconstruction Chicago, IL

Full mouth reconstruction often involves the use of oral restorations like dental bridges. The goal of the procedure is to restore and rebuild any damaged teeth the patient has. It is often performed by general dentists, and other restorations like veneers, implants, bridges, crown and fillings are used as well.

A person might need a full mouth reconstruction due to issues like:

  • Tooth decay-related damage to teeth
  • Cracked and broken teeth
  • Teeth that have been worn down due to teeth grinding and acid erosion
  • Headaches, muscle and jaw pain due to a bad bite

What to expect during full mouth reconstruction

For most patients, the process of getting a full mouth reconstruction starts with a dentist performing a comprehensive examination. The dentist will determine the extent of the damage to the patient's teeth and explain the best treatment options. The main things that the dentist will pay close attention to during the examination include the following.

The patient's teeth: How badly damaged the patient's teeth are determines which reconstructive treatments are needed. For example, moderate damage caused by tooth decay can be fixed with onlays and inlays, while crowns are needed for more severe damage

Gum disease: The dentist will also look for signs of gum disease during their evaluation. Treatments like root scaling and planning can be used to treat mild to moderate cases, while more invasive treatments like bone or gum grafts can be needed to address severe gum disease known as periodontal disease.

The jaw joints and the patient's bite: A stable bite does not cause any pain when a person bites down. It should not damage teeth either. Pain or teeth becoming damaged as a result of the way the upper and lower set of teeth meet when closed can be an indicator of a problem with the temporomandibular joints or the person's teeth alignment.

The appearance of the mouth: The dentist will also evaluate the aesthetics of the patient's face to see how the lips, mouth, gums and side profile relate with each other. The goal of reconstruction is to make the patient's repaired gums and teeth fit their facial appearance.

Once the dentist is done with the evaluation, they will come up with a comprehensive treatment plan that addresses all the patient's problems.

How dental bridges are used in full mouth reconstruction

Dental bridges are usually recommended when a person has lost multiple teeth. Bridges are anchored down on the two teeth closest to the hole created by the patient's missing teeth. These teeth are usually covered with crowns to provide a more stable base for the bridge. The bridge is attached to the teeth closest to the gap. It provides natural-looking artificial teeth that are securely fixed.
