Dental Implant Restoration Aftercare

Dental implants are becoming more and more popular with time. Many people are opting for dental implants in order to restore certain teeth that may have experienced damage. Because there are so many different dental procedures, it’s hard to know what the proper steps are to care for the teeth once the procedure is complete.

Having dental implant surgery can be an intense procedure, while it is safe and not very complicated, it is still an invasive procedure that requires a great deal of care after it is over. Knowing the best ways to care for dental implants after the surgery will be beneficial to the patient. Today, we will go over the steps to take in order to care for the dental implants.

Don’t disturb

An important part of the healing process of dental implants is that the patient doesn’t interfere with the area. It’s best that the patient avoids touching or messing with the area where the implants were placed. This could disrupt any healing that is occurring or it could even cause pain to be felt.

Gauze and ice

Immediately after the surgery, the area will be extremely sensitive and possibly still bleeding. While it is best to avoid touching the area, it will be necessary to change out the gauze frequently. A fresh set of gauze will ensure that the area doesn’t begin to form an infection. Be sure to take out the old gauze and replace it with a fresh set. Changing of the gauze may cause discomfort, but it is necessary in order to ensure that the wound stays clean.

Icing of the wounded area can aid in the swelling and the pain. While the dental implant surgery will not be extremely painful, there will be pain immediately after. Using an ice compress to bring down the swelling and numb the pain can help a person feel more comfortable and allow them to relax.

Saltwater rinse

Immediately after and even for a few days, it’s best to only use a saltwater rinse for the mouth. The chemicals in a typical mouthwash may be too harsh on the healing wound. Rinse with warm water and feel free to mix salt in with it. The salt will help in cleansing the wound causing no pain. The mouth as a whole can also benefit from saltwater rinses because the salt will cleanse and remove any stuck food particles that may have been left behind.

Gentle brushing

Immediately after, a gentle brushing around the wounded area can be done, but it may cause discomfort. After the initial 24 hours, be sure to brush all of the teeth and the surrounding area of the wound. Be delicate with the brush strokes to ensure that damage isn’t done to the healing wound.

Dental implant surgery can be scary, but afterward, it will provide a great benefit to the teeth. It’s important to know what steps to take in order to make sure that the dental implants heal. Be sure to give special care to the wound during the healing process.
